Borderline or bipolar? Lithium?

Q: My doctor doesnt know if i am borderline or bi-polar.I really dont feel like i am bi-polar. How can i tell?shouldnt my doctor do some kind of testing befor wanting to put me on lithium or other drugs for this disease?
