Cluster headaches and bipolar disorder
Q: Is there any relationship between Bipolar II and Cluster Headaches?
If so, what, and what treatment would you recommend for both? Thanks -
you have a great website by the way!
Dear Chris --
There is clearly a relationship between migraines and bipolar disorder.
Not sure how, but statistically clearly related. Not sure about Cluster
headaches.
However, searching on Pub Med using "cluster headaches bipolar", yields
this list:
-
Cluster headache and periodic affective illness: common chronobiological
features.
Funct Neurol. 1998 Jul-Sep;13(3):263-72. Review.
PMID: 9800155; UI: 99016537
-
-
Prevalence of migraine and muscle tension headache in depressive disorders.
J Affect Disord. 1989 Jan-Feb;16(1):33-6.
PMID: 2521648; UI: 89124135
-
-
Clinical uses of lithium salts.
Brain Res Bull. 1983 Aug;11(2):219-31. Review.
PMID: 6414655; UI: 84025710
-
-
Lithium carbonate in the treatment of cluster headaches.
J Neurol. 1980;224(1):1-8.
PMID: 6157794; UI: 81008685
So I'd say somebody else (1 and 4) seems to have observed an association
also, and one team reported treating with lithium.
