Q: Risperdal & Confused Thinking from Topomax
I am currently taking Zoloft, Lamictal, and Risperdal for bipolar II
and doing quite well, except for a lot of weight gain. While taking Zoloft
and Topamax a year ago (without Risperdal), I lost weight but became
increasingly confused. My question is, if I switch from Lamictal back to
Topamax, will the Risperdal I'm now taking counteract the confused thinking
caused by the Topamax?

Nice thought, but nope. Actually, I suppose I should see someone try it
before being so certain-sounding. But the confused thinking caused by
Topomax is similar to that we see with other anticonvulsants when they're
combined with other medications: slowed, disorganized, memory
impairment. Risperidone is not designed to affect this kind of
thing. So on solid theoretical grounds, I would predict -- that's a better
way of putting it -- that this wouldn't work and I wouldn't be walking around
with much doubt in my mind about it!
